The Evil Eyes: “Only sixties dances, people!”
Who are you?
I’m Classy Craig D, drummer of The Evil Eyes. I like medium-length walks on the beach, The Cramps, Biz Markie and Earl Grey tea.
Who are you wearing?
A partially healed road rash from a recent cycling accident, flip flops and my two-month old “noble savage” tiger tattoo.
Marry, fuck, Kill: Leather Uppers, The Bon, Evil Eyes?
That is a complex and multi-tiered question. For this I will have to consult the oracle that lives in my mansion. Hold on a moment while she partakes of the vapors to reveal the truth.
(15 minutes pass)
Well, she didn’t make any sense (as usual) but the best I could make out was that if you’re into any or all of the three acts in question, come on down and catch The Evil Eyes live in NYC at the Parkside Lounge and Don Pedro’s the first weekend in August!
You’ll be sure to find someone to do them with who’s into it. Be there! Be there! Be there!
Best Nadrwuar story?
By far my best Nardwuar story is when he was asked to play at the Mariposa Folk Fest and I was asked to be part of his backing band for the shows.
One of the shows was on the Toronto Island and there was a banner on the front of the stage advertising the radio station who sponsored the “storytelling in music” stage we were playing.
As a joke, I suggested it would be funny if he rolled himself up like a burrito in it during the set, which he did, much to the anger of the fest people. He also kept throwing the mic on the stage and the grass while he was going off on a tangent during the songs and just yelling at the crowd. At one point he started riding around on a bike that was lying on the ground as we played and he yelled as loud as he could as he cycled around in circles. The soundman was a real stick in the mud, and he kept reprimanding Nard for throwing the mic around, which he took no heed of. It actually got so bad the sound guy shoved/kinda punched Nardwuar to the ground when Nard tried to turn the tables on him and make friends and hug it out. Man, did that sound guy ever look like a total dick.
Fast forwarding ahead, Canadian legend Gordon Lightfoot played a secret set that night and Nard flipped his lid thinking of things to try to ask him last minute.
The one that won out was “Was your song ‘Sundown’ about Cathy Evelyn Smith, the injector of John Belushi?” I just remember him yelling “injector” several times to no avail as Gord just walked by. Pure gold.
When my Canadian friends moved to Germany, on the same night, they went into a bar and randomly caught a Leather Uppers show. Any comments on that?
Wow, that must have been in Cologne! That was a great show if do say so myself! They were lucky ducks to catch that one! They’re weren’t too many shows on that tour so the stars were aligned for them to catch that rocker.
Best part about living six hours away from your bandmate?
Ah, you’re talking about Groovy Greg of the Leather Uppers. The best thing is that visiting him means hanging out in Montreal, which is a town I’ve literally never had a bad night out in. Special shout-out to Coco and the Snack N’Blues bar. I only discovered this gem of a place the last time I was there and Groovy Greg took me there. Free candy and snacks at night, not to mention the constant in-house DJ Coco who vaguely looks like a South Asian Miles Davis.
Can you give curses with your evil eyes?
Ya, but I think it’s straining my eyes…I’m going to need glasses if I keep this up.
Are you scared that if you keep giving the evil eye, your eyes will stay that way?
Totally…nobody talks about the permanent ocular damage that comes from doing prolonged supernatural shit with your eyes….I’m going to try to raise awareness at our shows with an information booth and some literature. You know, pamphlets and the like.
Favorite band on Goner?
The all time fave is Guitar Wolf…the Wolf Rock LP on Goner is still up there as one of the wildest rock records of all time. After that would be the Ross Johnson compilation Make it Stop! In third is the Final Solutions…their set at SXSW when I played the Goner showcase was classic and super punk.
What is your message to the kids?
Smarten up! And stop moshing at garage shows…Like Tom Guido from SF’s Purple Onion used to say back in the day “Stop slam dancing! Only sixties dances! Only sixties dances, people!”
